E-Scooter Battery Care and Charging
How to charge, ride and store an e-scooter so the battery stays safer and lasts longer.
An e-scooter battery is usually sealed inside the deck, out of sight, and that's where problems hide. A few simple habits keep it safer and working longer.
1. Know your battery
Check the manual for the battery voltage and capacity, the charger that came with it, and the maker's charging and storage advice. Most scooters use 36V or 48V lithium-ion packs built into the deck.
2. Charging
- Use the charger that came with the scooter, or a genuine replacement from the maker.
- Let the scooter cool for a while after riding before you plug it in.
- Charge on a hard floor in an open area, away from exits, bedding and anything that burns easily.
- Charge while you're home and awake, not overnight or while you're out.
- Unplug it once it's full.
3. Riding
- Avoid deep puddles and heavy rain. Water in the deck is a common cause of battery and controller faults.
- Go easy over kerbs and potholes. Hard knocks can damage the cells in the deck.
- Don't run the battery completely flat every ride if you can avoid it.
4. Storing
- For storage over a few weeks, leave the battery partly charged rather than full or flat.
- Store it somewhere cool and dry, not in a hot car or in full sun.
- Top it up every month or so if it isn't being used.
5. Warning signs: stop using it
- The deck is swollen, bulging or cracked.
- It smells sweet, chemical or of burning.
- It gets hot while charging or riding when it didn't before.
- It hisses, pops or leaks.
- It's been in water or had a hard crash.
Unplug it if it's safe to do so, move it outside away from anything that can burn if you can do that safely, and don't charge or ride it again. If it's smoking or on fire, get everyone out and call 000. Have the battery checked by the maker or dealer. Don't open the deck to get at the battery yourself.
6. Disposal
Never put a scooter battery in the household bin. Ask the dealer or your local council about drop-off for e-mobility batteries. Many small battery drop-off points don't take them.
