Charging E-Bikes Safely at Home
Where and when to charge an e-bike battery at home, and the warning signs to stop.
Most e-bike battery fires start while the battery is charging. The good news is that the main risks are well known, and a few habits cut them right down.
1. Buy and charge with the right gear
- Use the charger that came with the bike, or a genuine replacement from the maker.
- Don't use a cheap universal charger just because the plug fits.
- Some states now have safety rules for e-bike and e-scooter batteries and chargers. When you buy a bike, battery or charger, check it meets the rules where you live.
- Be wary of very cheap replacement batteries with no maker or safety details.
2. Where to charge
- On a hard, non-flammable floor, such as concrete in the garage or carport.
- Away from exits and hallways, so a fire can't block your way out.
- Not in a bedroom, and not on carpet, a couch or a bed.
- Away from anything that burns easily, such as boxes, fuel or paint.
- Where a working smoke alarm will hear it.
3. When to charge
- Let the battery cool after a ride before you plug it in.
- Charge while you're home and awake. Don't charge overnight or while you're out.
- Unplug it once it's full.
- Don't charge a battery that is below freezing or hot from the sun. Let it come to room temperature first.
4. Look after the battery
- Check the battery and charger leads for damage before each charge.
- Keep the contacts clean and dry.
- A battery that's been dropped, crashed or soaked should be checked by the dealer before you charge it.
- Never open, repair or modify the battery yourself.
5. Warning signs: stop charging
- Swelling, cracks or leaks.
- A sweet, chemical or burning smell.
- Hissing, popping or smoke.
- Unusual heat while charging.
Unplug at the wall if it's safe to do so. If it's smoking or on fire, get everyone out, shut the door behind you and call 000. Don't try to put out a lithium battery fire yourself.
