Battery Adapters Between Brands: Are They Safe?

How brand-to-brand battery adapters work, what can go wrong, and what to check before you use one.

Battery adapters let you fit one brand's battery to another brand's tool. They're popular when you already own a lot of batteries in one system. They can work, but they skip the checks the tool makers designed in, so it's worth knowing the risks.

1. Same voltage isn't always the same system

An "18V" pack from one brand and a "20V max" pack from another are often the same thing: 5 lithium-ion cells in series, about 18V nominal and about 21V fully charged. That's why many adapters exist for these packs.

But voltage is only part of it. Brands differ in how the battery, tool and charger talk to each other and where the protection is done.

4. The simpler option

If you're starting out, pick one battery system that has the tools you need and stay with it. A bare tool from the same system is often cheaper in the long run than adapters and damaged packs.
